Survey Results Message

March 17, 2022

Dear Members of the Georgetown University in Qatar Community:

I write today to provide an update on an initiative we launched in Spring 2021 in order to advance our commitment to an inclusive, equitable, and supportive environment for all students.

The Campus Cultural Climate Survey provided an opportunity for students to reflect on a range of issues related to their experience and perception of the culture at Georgetown University in Qatar—including their sense of belonging; experiences involving bias, prejudice, and discrimination; and University resources and responsiveness. I’d like to say thank you to our students for your participation and honesty in taking part in this survey.

This afternoon we will be sharing the findings at a community town hall and will be releasing the results of the survey on our website. We will be joined by Rosemary Kilkenny, vice president of diversity, equity & inclusion and chief diversity officer, Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity & Affirmative Action (IDEAA); Joel Hellman, dean, Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS); and Drew Allen, associate vice president of institutional data analysis, Office of Assessment and Decision Support (OADS).

As we will discuss, there are many aspects of the survey findings that require our serious engagement to ensure that all students feel a sense of belonging and inclusion. Although the findings also identify community strengths, we must address areas where more work needs to be done to live up to our values.

We encourage you to read the results, and welcome your feedback at the town hall and on an ongoing basis as we move forward with discussions among faculty, staff, and student advisory groups. Your ideas and suggested actions are welcomed as we attempt to build a more inclusive culture. You can also submit feedback and propose actions at any time via guqdean@georgetown.edu, or anonymously through our online form.

I conclude with President John J. DeGioia’s call to action to improve our campus climate: “each generation takes on the responsibility of the work of building community—of ensuring that we uphold our values and our mission.”

I look forward to engaging with you at our town hall today at 3:30 – 5:00 PM on Zoom  and working together with you in the days to come.

Sincerely,

Clyde Wilcox
Interim Dean
