Alumni Spotlight: Dimitrios Sardellis

What are you doing now?

I am working in consulting with Deloitte & Touche. I am a Business Analyst based in Doha but working on projects throughout the region.

How long did it take you to find your first job? How did you stay motivated?

It took approximately 3 months. My first job was at GU-Q where I was a student development officer. I stayed motivated by keeping myself informed in regards to the efforts one needs to put after graduating to find a job, staying in touch with friends to discuss concerns, get their opinion on things and many times be referred to an opportunity that you did not know about and keeping myself busy by doing other small types of work, networking, researching, etc. It is a difficult time to find your first job after graduation but all you need is patience, persistence and to be proactive and you will get there.

Looking back, what were some of your “takeaways” from your GU-Q experience?

In terms of academics, the analytical thinking and research skills that I was able to develop have definitely helped my professional career and they are skills that are on demand in the market. In terms of extracurricular, the opportunities that Georgetown offers through all the clubs, programs and athletics have helped me develop leadership skills that are also crucial in today’s world but also have had an effect in my personal life through the concept of reflection, the Jesuit values, and the responsibility we have to the world as global leaders. The GU-Q experience has shaped my character and help me develop a number of skills that make me stand out in the market place.

What advice would you give to current undergraduates who may want to follow in your footsteps?

It is important to start thinking about what your next step is going to be early on. Once you have an idea about what that next step is, make an action plan on how you are going to get there. Doing your own research, talking to a counselor, networking through LinkedIn, meeting alumni, etc., will help you solidify your action plan. Internships and other work opportunities are a very important aspect of your action plan. You want to be able to present yourself as a competitive candidate that has been exposed to the market and to different experiences.

What are some of your proudest achievements so far? Future plans?

I am proud to be the first GU-Qer to join Deloitte in Qatar. My plan is to try to create opportunities for more to join.
