GU-Q teams bring home Qatar Foundation Triathlon wins

GU-Q Staff Win at Qatar Foundation Triathlon

Two GU-Q teams took part in the Qatar Foundation (QF) Triathlon on February 1st, 2019, which included a 500m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.

Both 3-person teams, representing the departments of Human Resources (HR) and Facilities and IT (FIT), scored in the top ten in the corporate division. The team composed of Alessandro di Muro, Roel Serrano, and Gosia Ledwon took home the 2nd place team medal,  as well as the trophy for the fastest university overall.

Gosia Ledwon and Gemma Davies, who both work in HR, each independently decided to form GU-Q teams to compete in the triathlon, before coordinating their efforts. Gemma, whose team included Margaret Mersch and David Phongsavan, is herself a member of the event co-sponsor, TriClub Doha.

They only enrolled three weeks before the event date, but the hard work paid off. “This was my first triathlon, and it was a lot of fun and a great team effort. The six of us really wanted to represent Georgetown and show our community’s dedication to health and fitness,” said Gosia.

The event is sponsored by the General Motors Corporation (GMC) and organized in conjunction with TriClub Doha, a triathlon club founded in 2013.

This was the third race of the season in the series and took place at Education City using the Recreation Centre’s 50m indoor pool, and roads within Education City that had been closed for the race.

The final TriDoha Triathlon will be held on Friday, April 5, 2019. With plenty of time to train, Gosia says we may see another GU-Q team effort soon.
