Ayman Shabana is Associate Professor of Theology and Chair of Culture and Politics at Georgetown University in Qatar.

Professor Shabana is the author of Custom in Islamic Law and Legal Theory (Springer, 2010) and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Religious Ethics, The Muslim World, Journal of Islamic Ethics, Sociology of Islam, Journal of Qur’anic Studies, HAWWA: Journal of Women of the Middle East and the Islamic World, Islamic Law and Society, and Religion Compass. He has also contributed articles and chapters to books, including to End-of-Life Care, Dying and Death in the Islamic Moral Tradition (2023), Islam and Biomedicine (2022), Routledge Handbook of Islamic Law (2019), and The Oxford Handbook of Islamic Law (2018).

Professor Shabana is the director of the Islamic Bioethics Project, which has been supported by three consecutive grants from the National Priorities Research Program at the Qatar National Research Fund. In 2012, he received the Research Excellence Award at the Qatar Annual Research Forum. He was also a visiting research fellow at the Islamic Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Professor Shabana received his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles.
