UREP Funding Conditions & Timeline
Since UREP is a student-driven program, students should be deeply involved in the proposal preparation. At the same time, faculty involvement, advice, and guidance is essential to make for a good proposal, and if funded, to make the project a success. The UREP considers and encourages collaborative projects involving more than one academic or research institution in Qatar and, in some cases, a UREP can be designed to involve commercial firms and government offices in Qatar.
Funding is awarded on a competitive basis and consists of $1,000 for faculty mentorship activities, $1,500 in student stipend and up to $2,300 in supply and travel expenses per each student participant on the project (This includes equipment, software, supplies, travel, books, and miscellaneous items).
The main conditions of the UREP funding program are:
- The maximum ratio of students to faculty member is 3 to 1. There is a limit of six students per project.
- Primary Faculty Mentors (PFM) must have a PHD or a terminal degree and be affiliated to a submitting institution based on Qatar.
- Students can apply for a UREP proposal as long as he/she is still enrolled in an educational institution as a student, is a resident of Qatar and has at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. The UREP involves a time commitment, so a student must make sure he/she can balance her academic life with a UREP grant if awarded
- Students on a particular UREP grant can be from the different academic institutions and students cannot apply to more than one UREP grant per cycle.
- Faculty mentors can be from different academic and non-academic institutions and can be involved in up to 3 concurrent UREP grants.
UREP Cycle 23 is now open for submissions and closes on April 23rd, 2018.

UREP Assessment Criteria
For the technical evaluation of each UREP application for funding, QNRF solicits peer reviews from 3 qualified independent peer reviewers for each proposal. The Peer Reviewers are advised to use the following criteria as a guide:
- Anticipated benefit to the undergraduate student: How well does the proposed activity advances discovery and understanding while promoting teaching, training, and learning? What are the nature of tasks to be performed by the student, the anticipated final student product, and the anticipated level of faculty-student interaction.
- Anticipated benefit in creating a research culture in Qatar: How does the student’s participation in the project can enhance the creation of a research culture related to Qatar in the fields of natural sciences, engineering and technology, medical and health sciences, agricultural sciences, social sciences and the humanities.
- Intellectual merit of the proposed activity: How important is the proposed activity to advancing knowledge and understanding in any of the above mentioned fields? What is the nature of the final research product and the student’s involvement during the research experience.The soundness, originality, and creativity of the research or the project design is assessed.
- Mentoring and supervisory plan: What is the time schedule of the project with the scheduled plans for the mentoring and supervisory roles by the proposing faculty member(s)? The plans should ensure the development of student-faculty interaction. They should also include plans for program evaluation during the time scheduled for the project.
- Bonus Points: Collaboration: Research proposals that ensure collaborative mentorship with one or more academic and non academic institutions in Qatar will receive 1 Bonus Point added to the final score. Collaboration with non-academic institutions in Qatar will receive 2 Bonus Points added to the final score. In case of collaboration with both academic and non-academic institutions, the proposal will receive the maximum of 2 Bonus Points. UREP defines a project as being collaborative only in the case when there is at least one faculty member or mentor from each of the collaborating institutions, who will be supervising and quality mentoring the undergraduate student(s).
