Untouchability as Global

Untouchability in the 21st Century – also called caste discrimination or “discrimination based on work and descent” – affects at least 250 million people living across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, with diaspora communities in Europe and the Americas. This talk explores the historical making of this little-known transnational world of untouchable groups, focusing on the experiences of Korea’s Baekjeong.

Latinx (Literary) Imaginings and Our (Un-)Knowable Futures or, Are We Post-Latinx Yet?

Ricardo Ortiz is Professor of Latinx Literary and Cultural Studies in the Department of English at Georgetown University, where he also directs the MA Program in Engaged and Public Humanities. His research also focuses on Critical Theory, American Studies, and Gender and Queer Studies.
He served as Chair of Georgetown’s Department of English from 2015 to 2021, and as President of the Association of Department of English in 2022. In 2024 Prof. Ortiz is also co-chairing, with Dr. Adanna Johnson, Georgetown’s Working Group on Student Identity, Agency and Belonging.

Gender in Foreign Policy

Gender in Foreign Policy is the seventh event in the signature Hiwaraat series launched in fall of 2023. The conference addresses gender-informed approaches to foreign policy and diplomacy, the role and risks of AI in policy and practice, and gender aspects of foreign policy in conflict situations with a focus on Gaza and Sudan. The conference will convene leading diplomats, public officials, academics, and students to discuss the interconnected, topical themes.
