GU-Q Celebrates Qatar National Sports Day with Family-Fun Activities

Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) will celebrate Qatar National Sports Day on Tuesday, February 11, with a run/walk circuit, a barbecue breakfast, and a fun for all football match on an inflatable pitch.

Three years ago Qatar became one of the few nations to dedicate a national day for sports. Since the inception of the annual holiday, GU-Q has embraced this new tradition by holding an engaging and unique athletic community event each year.

This year GU-Q again has planned a National Sports Day morning that is fun for the whole family. In addition to the run/walk, football, and barbecue breakfast, activities will include miniature golf, ten-pin bowling, croquet, and a tug of war.

Scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m. at the Georgetown campus in Education City, the celebration promises to provide a great start to National Sports Day. For weeks, students, faculty, and staff have been anticipating the GU-Q special event and the many other exciting Sports Day activities that are scheduled to occur around Qatar.

“Every year the level of enthusiasm that our students and staff bring to Sports Day creates wonderful memories for everyone who joins us,” said Mary Bryan, Health and Wellness Officer at GU-Q. “At Georgetown we love being a part of increasing the social awareness in Qatar about the benefits and importance of physical activity and the social benefits of sports.”

Georgetown’s National Sports Day event is organized by the University’s Office of Health and Wellness and the University’s Office of Facilities Management. Facilities Management Director Clare Wait said, “It is extremely satisfying to have a role in raising sports awareness in Qatar. Every year we try to provide an activity with a special Georgetown flourish. The GU-Q campus is an ideal location to celebrate the day and I am pleased that the space can be utilized for purposes such as this for the broader community.”

At the academic level, Georgetown University has already demonstrated its commitment to the importance of sports by joining the Josoor Institute as its institutional academic partner. In this role, Georgetown University will be working with Qatar 2022 in the coming year to design, develop, and deliver a variety of courses associated with the sports and events management industry.
