Energy Studies

Energy plays a critical role in geopolitical dynamics due to its central role in economies and societies worldwide. Advancements in technology and changing energy demands have put energy at the forefront of local and international agendas, making it a critical area of study across disciplines. GU-Q supports student learning and research about the impact of energy on social, cultural, economic, and political development through the Certificate in Energy Studies, a robust research agenda, and community events–advancing the field with a focus on energy in the Global South.

Our Research

Through studying energy interactions at both the personal and global level, GU-Q scholarship engages with the important ways in which energy impacts our lives and shapes our societies.

Energy Humanities

Energy Humanities positions Doha and GU-Q as a global hub for the study of energy via the history, literature, philosophy, art, and political thought of the Global South. Through our interdisciplinary commitment to the study of energy cultures, we are opening new directions in energy research, connecting a global community of scholars, and building a repository of materials for the development of energy humanities pedagogy.

Energy Security

With national resources and vast amounts of capital at stake, energy plays a significant role in global and local security concerns.  This research explores how nations secure their own energy futures in negotiation with other nations around the world, with a special focus on significant events and technologies which are changing the way that countries exchange energy resources.
