Energy has played a critical role in global affairs in the 20th and 21st centuries, and has been the driving force behind development in the Middle East since the 1950s. This research examines the role of Energy in maintaining and threatening national security in the region, and beyond.

Energy Education

Rapid advances in technology and geopolitical changes mean that academic curricula must constantly address new energy insecurity and decarbonization challenges. This project seeks to generate comprehensive approaches to accelerate capacity building in this critical area.

Qatar’s Maritime Sector Resilience

“The Maritime Sector and Resilience-building in a Small State: The Qatar Case Study” collaborative research grant examines the role of Qatar’s maritime sector in building resilience and achieving prosperity for future generations through society, energy, and resource sustainability.

Eastern Mediterranean Energy Geopolitics

In collaboration with Qatar University, this research project leading to a journal special issue, explores major contemporary energy-related geopolitical issues and challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Energy Security in Qatar

“Managing National Security Risk during and after the Blockade: Strategic Challenges and Opportunities for Qatar’s Energy Sector” is a multi-year research project which examines how Qatar has managed its national security risk since the 2017 blockade, and how the evolving strategic environment will result in new challenges and opportunities in the future.

Small States as Maritime Powers

“Small States as Maritime Powers” focuses on how states with limited material capabilities but stakes in shaping the order at sea, seek to strike a balance between their naval interests and their maritime security interests. GU-Q’s contribution to this project led by King’s College London, covers Qatar’s maritime power and Liquid Natural Gas shipping.
