Biography

From a tiny rural village in the western American high-plains, I’ve wondered and immersed myself in non-human nature throughout my life. There’s a resonance between those plains and the Qatari desert, and a similarity in the ongoing disappearance of other species from these spaces. Shocked into a greater awareness of all this while an undergraduate, I went on to get a Masters degree in international affairs and a PhD in philosophy, and have made environmental ethics and the promise of genuine educational communities my professional focus.

I partner with my students to think carefully through the greatest non-nuclear challenges to life on earth and to employ the best of our moral imagination to envision what genuine environmental solutions look like. In addition to my own teaching, I partner with faculty and staff at GU-Q to promote teaching excellence at all levels of our institution as well as our broader educational ecosystems in DC and Qatar. And when weather permits, I walk through Oxygen Park to spy on the birds, trees, and bees.

Although caught up in living multiple lives at once, my primary interest is my wife and children and our collective goal of building a permanent and fully sustainable home somewhere near Neverland.
