Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi Inspires SFS-Q Graduates

The Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives for the 112th Congress, met with Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar graduates during her recent visit to the country.

Leader Pelosi praised Georgetown University SFS-Q seniors at a dinner honoring them at the Four Seasons Hotel. Commending the graduates, she said: “I was immediately struck by the enthusiasm of the students: they are enthusiastic to learn and they are enthusiastic about Georgetown. It is a campus full of intellectually curious young people who are tremendously proud of their association with Georgetown University.”

“The students on the Doha campus are pioneers. Being part of something new takes courage, and I commend the Doha students for their entrepreneurial spirit,” she added.

Leader Pelosi first made history in November 2002 when the Democratic contingent of the U.S. House of Representatives elected her the first woman to lead a major political party in Congress. Pelosi continued to break boundaries, as from 2007-2011, she served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, having been elected as the first woman in American history to serve in this prestigious position.

An inspirational figure within the political world, Pelosi continues to set an example across the globe, encouraging and motivating others. “The students I meet around the world are weary of war. They want an end to violence. They want to end global warming and preserve the planet. They want jobs, economic opportunity, and broadly-shared prosperity. And it is the young people of the world who have the power to change the world – to change their future. That is why the one piece of advice I would give to the graduating class of 2012 is: know your power.”

She also praised the country’s efforts to alleviate the common misconceptions that exist within the region, citing Sheikha Moza’s focus on education in Qatar as a primary factor. Due to these initiatives, an increasing number of people have had the opportunity to learn about Qatar and the exciting opportunities that lie within the country.
