Georgetown SFS-Q Hosts 2nd Breast Cancer Fundraiser

Women’s Society and Development Club Raises 41,000 in Hours

Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Q) hosted the second Breast Cancer Fundraiser, in the SFS-Q Atrium organized by the Women’s Society and Development Club (WSDC) The motivation for the breast Cancer fundraiser was to support cancer patients, raise awareness and to engage the community in becoming part of this noble cause. In just four hours donations reached QR 41,000 which was collected by a representative of the Qatar National Cancer Society (QNC).

“We need more events like this to raise awareness of Breast Cancer in Qatar, and we hope this occasion will inspire others to take action and for women in Qatar to take preventative measures against Breast Cancer” said Ghada Al-Subaey, Founder of WSDC.

“Too often we speak of our support for a great cause but fail to act on it, being a member of WSDC has allowed me to directly contribute to a great cause” commented Khawla Al-Derbasti, member of WSDC.

SFS-Q students and members of WSDC, Ghada Al-Subaey, Zarqa Parvez, Khawla Al-Derbasti, Al Maha Al Hammad and Mashael Al Malki organised the event and reached out to different boutiques and vendors in Doha. The participants were very happy to take part in the Fundraiser and responded quickly, making generous donations.

This year’s participants included Vera Wang, The Closet, The Vanity Room, Zabaara Abayas, Fanilla Couture, WAAD Designs, Impression boutique, Creation_nkf and Texture boutique. Homemade cupcakes were baked by students including Al-Jawhra Al Thani, receiving great responses and praise from visitors. The event was festive and spread hope as students, friends, families and faculty all took part and made donations. In a lovely coincidence the influential Arab media personality Muna Abu Sulyman visited the fundraiser and praised the organization and the number of women entrepreneurs participants.

Zarqa Parvez, Founder of WSDC concluded, “We hope that WSDC in Georgetown will continue to commit to this cause and become more effective each year. WSDC is planning more events and projects dedicated to youth and women’s development. We hope that people continue to come to our events and help us in our goal to ‘Inspire, Dream and Achieve’.”aa
