Georgetown SFS-Q Hoya Men's Football Team Wins HBKU Fall Football Tournament

Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar’s (SFS-Q) men’s football team, The Hoyas became the proud champions of the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Fall Football Cup Tournament, on Thursday 6th December.

The Hoyas defeated Texas A&M Qatar team, the Aggies, two – zero in the cup final, avenging their only loss of the season and proudly ending the semester with nine wins and securing the tournament’s first place trophy.

The action packed second-half of the final match saw goals by Mohamed Abouzied and Souleyman Mana which highlighted a team effort marked by great defence and persistent midfield play.Saleh Al Mana, Hoya Team Captain commented on the win, “I’m extremely proud of the team’s performance this season. They have all shown a great deal of dedication and commitment to the team and this has paid off in a truly great victory. Coach Chris Wilson, his Assistant coaches John Ngurugwe and Kevin Gomes, and our statistician Sherif Elgindi were impeccable and provided the necessary strategy and tactics to secure the Championship and bring the cup to its new home at SFS-Q.”

Al Mana went on to congratulate each and every member of the team, and give a special thanks to the Hoyas’ vocal fan base, including faithful students, alumni, faculty, and staff which turned out with large numbers to show their support.

Contributing to The Hoyas’ league and tournament success were team coaches Chris Wilson and John Ngurugwe.

Wilson noted, “We played superbly in the final against a good team in Texas A&M, Qatar. Leading into this match we felt confident that we could win and on the day it became a game we just had to win to reward the SFS-Q community who turned out in force to cheer us on. I’m very proud of what the group has achieved in such a short length of time. The effort and commitment shown by the squad has been excellent and for us as a group, I think this is just the start.”
