Georgetown University Hosts 6th Annual Education City Community Fair

Over 500 visitors from the Doha community flocked to the Education City campus of Georgetown University Qatar (GU-Q), to attend their sixth Annual Community Fair, a fast emerging tradition that introduces newcomers to Doha, and gives veteran residents an introduction to what’s new.

The university’s atrium was converted to an exhibition space, with over 40 participating vendors occupying brightly decorated stalls offering everything from business cards and informational brochures, to giveaways and gifts, to promote their products and services. The wide-range of Qatar based exhibitors represented media and culture, travel and tourism, food, healthcare and education, finance, sports, music and even a pet care company.

Mary Anne Mahin, Chief Human Resources Officer explains; “The fair at GU-Q is a chance for everyone to learn more about the city they live in and maybe even stumble across some new places, organizations and companies to explore. GU-Q’s annual fair is an opportunity for guests to connect and ask questions to exhibitors who enjoy the opportunity to meet their customers in a relaxed environment.”

One popular stand that has been a recurring fixture at the annual fair is Doha Mums, a lively community of passionate mothers who come together to celebrate all things family. “The fair is a great way to engage with people. Doha Mums is usually found through a web search, so it is nice to meet people face to face” says Ghida from Doha Mums.

Another popular booth was for Qatar Airways, the award-winning flagship airline that has become one of an elite group of airlines worldwide to have been awarded a 5-Star rating. Representatives from the company said, “We are here to support our partner Qatar Foundation and it is the perfect place for people to come and ask questions.” They also donated two business class tickets to any online Qatar Airways destination that were given away to some lucky winners at the fair.

Several other raffle prizes were awarded at the fair, including Dnata’s gift of round trip economy class tickets to Dubai, as well as two nights at a 5 star Hotel. Other winners received an Apple TV from International Financial Services, two travel vouchers from Mannai Holidays, a Hilton Hotel Business lunch and dinner buffet for two, and FedEx/Falcon Logistics gave away 10lbs. shipment anywhere in the world. For those who didn’t win a prize, an elaborate assortment of healthy juices and appetizers were provided by GU-Q.

“Many complain that there is nothing cultural to do in Doha,” an exhibitor said, adding “but this event is the perfect example of how that is not true; Doha has a great many things to offer and many of them can be introduced right here.”

Attending exhibitor were the American Women’s Association, the Doha Community Orchestra, the Doha Film Institute, Qatar UK Year of Culture, the Regatta Sailing, the SubAqua Club, Mannai Holidays, Gulf Adventures, RAW.me, Diet Delights, Red Velvet, Qatar Maid Service, FedEx, Qatar Veterinary Centre, the Fetomaternal Center, Weill Cornell Medical College, the HBKU Faculty and Staff Life Committee, and many more.
