Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) and The Diplomatic Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) have signed an agreement to offer and implement the one-year Executive Master’s in Diplomacy and International Affairs degree program (EMDIA). The agreement was signed by the GU-Q Dean Dr. Clyde Wilcox and H.E. the Director of the Diplomatic Institute, Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohamed al-Horr.

The (EMDIA) program is offered through the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and in close collaboration with GU-Q and MOFA. It seeks to enhance the ability of practitioners from Qatar and the Middle East region to formulate and implement effective foreign policy.

Dr. Clyde Wilcox noted that the multidisciplinary program focuses on the challenges in global politics and economics facing diplomats, critical thinking skills related to the major tools of statecraft, and areas of strategic importance to the region.  “At GU-Q, we are very pleased to facilitate this program and to be able to extend the resources and expertise of Georgetown University in developing a graduate program that fits the specific needs of Qatari diplomats and the country’s foreign policy strategies and goals.”

H.E. Dr al-Horr shared that the program is open to Qatari diplomats, candidates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qatari officials involved in foreign policy nominated by their ministries, and practitioners of diplomatic work from the Middle East region nominated by the governments of their countries.

The year-long program consists of nine modules — each consisting of two intensive courses —  which are being held on the GU-Q campus, and one capstone visit to Washington, DC. Courses have already begun, with the latest module  “Nuclear Weapons and International and Regional Security” and “International Law,” taught by leading experts in the field.

The modules will be taught by faculty affiliated with Georgetown’s campuses in Washington and in Doha during five-day intensive residencies. The capstone visit to Georgetown’s campus in Washington, DC will run for four days and include sessions with Georgetown faculty members and meetings with policymakers and representatives of international institutions.
