Discover Georgetown Promises Prospective Students a Taste of College Life

Joseph Hernandez

Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) is inviting prospective undergraduate students to “Discover Georgetown” on Wednesday, November 6 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. This annual open house event offers attendees a chance to explore the university’s globally recognized academic programs, meet faculty and current students, tour the GU-Q campus, and learn about the extracurricular opportunities that create the university’s unique campus experience.

Discover Georgetown is open to high school juniors, seniors, university transfer students, and their families. The information session will include a personal message from the dean, Dr. Ahmad Dallal, followed by sessions covering the admissions process, career counseling, and  presentations about Georgetown’s renowned Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree, including majors in International Politics, International Economics, International History, and Culture and Politics. Attendees will also learn about the five new minors now offered in addition to the minor in Arabic.

Joseph Hernandez, Director of Admissions at GU-Q, suggests that students and their families should engage with universities on their short-list, in order to make an informed decision about their future studies. “For parents and students, the transition to university is an exciting experience, but it can also be a stressful and uncertain time. Being able to see for themselves, ask questions and hear the perspectives of the members of this educational community is extremely beneficial in the decision-making process,” he says, adding that “walking through classrooms and hallways gives prospective students a chance to imagine themselves at Georgetown and decide if this is the place they want to spend the next four years of their lives.”

Members of the university’s alumni will also be on hand to share their career experiences following graduation, a part of the open house that Mariam Lachin, the Associate Director of Admissions at GU-Q, says appeals to the parents in attendance in particular. “Our graduates are highly sought after by employers and go on to work in a wide variety of industries, including business, communications, teaching, government, banking and finance, and more. Speaking with one of our career counselors about the critical skills that employers look for is crucial, and can help point students towards the right program and a successful career.”

For those that cannot attend the event, the university offers weekly Admissions Hours, where prospective students can meet admissions representatives to learn more about GU-Q programs and the admissions process.

Doors open at 4:30pm. The event is open to the public, but interested attendees are encouraged to register at  https://admissions.qatar.georgetown.edu/register/dg2019
