8th Annual Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness Workshop

The 8th annual Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Awareness Workshop, a joint effort of Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) and the Qatar Ministry of Defense’s National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons (NCPW), recently took place on the university’s Education City campus to raise awareness about the dangers associated with nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons.

Workshop participants included members of NCPW and students from GU-Q as well as several other universities and high schools in Qatar. Panel presentations reviewed types of WMDs, the role of NCPW as a representative body of Qatar in the global WMD disarmament movement, and informed students about internship and future career opportunities with the NCPW.

The workshop was launched with a welcome address given by Dr. Kai-Henrik Barth, Senior Assistant Dean for Research Support at GU-Q , and Brigadier (Air) Hassan Saleh Al-Nesf, Chairman of the NCPW.

“Georgetown University in Qatar is proud of its partnership with the National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons.  As the international branch campus of Georgetown University in Washington D.C., we have an interest in contributing to a safer, more peaceful world through teaching and research,” said Barth. He went on to say, ”the workshop today will encourage you to learn about the important work of the National Committee which contributes to the prohibition of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.”

Several student participants received awards for their active engagement in the workshop, including one student from HBKU, Maryam Al-Hababi and Zhengyao Guo from GU-Q and Daniah Moreno from the University of Calgary in Qatar.
