Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar held its 4th annual Family Fun Day with the popular theme of “Superheroes.” Throughout the afternoon, SFS-Q community members including staff, spouses, and children gathered in the gym of the Qatar Foundation Recreation Center to celebrate each other. Games including mini-croquet, basketball, mini-hurdles, an egg and spoon race and a three-legged race filled the schedule with laughter and play. A bouncy castle was reserved, along with an ice cream stand and a face painting booth for the youngest patrons.

A contest called “Dress the Bride,” awarded first place to the comeliest two-ply tissue tailored outfit worn by Julia Nasser and a superhero quiz devised by Erica Haviland, an employee in SFS-Q’s Student Development department, stymied most participants, but Ganesh Seshan, an SFS-Q Professor and closeted comic buff, dazzled the audience by answering 14 out of the 18 questions correctly, while Séréna Hajjar scored highest in the children’s comic quiz.

A small Spiderman, a pint-sized firewoman and many other diminutive superheroes were also in attendance. A game of “How Many Candies are in this Jar” landed one sharp guesser within a few sweets of the sweet spot.

A showdown between the genders during the SFS-Q tug-of-war saw the men pulling their way to their breakthrough victory after losing to the women in the past two years. “Generally, we strategize using a one-two-pull,” said Karen Rasch, SFS-Q Assistant Director for Human Resources and key member of the women’s tug-of-war effort. “This year, the men caught on, and we were disorganized.”

The three-legged race became hotly contested, as one parent carried his child to victory across the finish line. Lost along the way were the parents of another SFS-Q employee, fallen in action, clearing the way for a photo-finish victory by Aneesa and Shaz Ahmed. The event closed with the traditional beating of the piñata, gifting departing children with plenty of candies and fistfuls of helium balloons for the road.
