Research & Experiential Grants for Students

GU-Q has multiple sources of funding that can cover research studies, travel grants, summer courses and creative projects.

GU-Q Student Research Assistant Positions

Students have the opportunity to apply for Student Research Assistant positions available through CIRS, the Office of Student Research, and with individual faculty members. There are also a number of opportunities for students to get involved with Qatar National Research Fund’s National Priorities Research Program (NPRP). Such opportunities are posted to students at the start of each academic year or as positions become available.

Annual Undergraduate Research Conference (formerly MESSA) Conference and Journal

GU-Q students organized and hosted an undergraduate research conference attended by students from GU-Q, Education City, Qatar University, and from around the world, who presented and discussed their research. While the first seven of these conferences focused on the Middle East, the eighth conference in March 2019 broadened this focus to include all regions.

Classroom Research under Mentorship from a Faculty Member

GU-Q offers two opportunities for advanced research training conducted under the mentorship of a professor: honors in the major, and certificates.

Honors in the Major

Every year, faculty members select each major’s top students and offer them training in the best principles of research in that field’s tradition. Students then author a substantial research paper and present it to the GU-Q community before a decision is made on which papers merit honors recognition.

Certificates

Students may also complement their major field of study by pursuing specialized coursework that deepens their understanding of a particular region by completing a certificate in American Studies, Arab and Regional Studies, or Media and Politics. These certificates include a significant research component under the guidance of a professor with expertise in that field.

External Research Opportunities for Students

Undergraduate Research Experience Program (UREP), Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF)

The UREP provides students with an opportunity to develop their research skills, gain experience in team-based collaboration and participate in a real world project under the mentorship of a GU-Q faculty member. There are two application cycles each year with competition deadlines taking place in the Spring and Fall semesters.

Fellowships and Award Opportunities

Students are encouraged to seek fellowship and award opportunities. In the past GU-Q students have received the ‘Georgetown Environment Initiative Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship’ and the prestigious ‘Palmer Award’ from LeaderShape Institute, among others. Opportunities from the Washington, DC campus such as the Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs and the Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Services fellowship are also accessible to GU-Q students.
