Join us for the inaugural Art, Culture, and Heritage joint orientation with Qatar Museums.
In collaboration with Qatar Museums (QM), GU-Q is hosting an art, culture, and heritage orientation session for Education City (EC) and Qatar University (QU) faculty. This inaugural event, in a series hosted across educational or cultural venues, offers introductions to the range of art and cultural resources in Qatar, provides opportunities for museum directors and curators to engage with faculty, and facilitates collaborative efforts around research and curricular projects.

In a world threatened by religious animosities, political and cultural fragmentation, and ecological catastrophe, Pope Francis invites political, cultural, and interreligious leaders to collaborate in shaping a culture of encounter where all persons, religions, and cultures can share their treasures in an atmosphere of mutual respect and dignity. This presentation will suggest five areas where interreligious dialogue partners can work with political and cultural leaders in shaping a culture of encounter: Aesthetics, Academic Sharing, Spiritual Encounter, Concern for the World, and Friendship.
Leo D. Lefebure is the inaugural holder of the Matteo Ricci, S.J., Chair of Theology at Georgetown University. He is the author of the award-winning Transforming Interreligious Relations: Catholic Responses to Religious Pluralism in the United States. His other award-winning books include Revelation, the Religions, and Violence; True and Holy: Christian Scripture and Other Religions; Revelation, the Religions, and Violence, and The Path of Wisdom: A Christian Commentary on the Dhammapada, coauthored with Peter Feldmeier. Lefebure is the program chair of the American Theological Society, the past president of the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies, a research fellow of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a trustee emeritus of the Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions.

Mehran Kamrava is Professor of Government at Georgetown University Qatar. Kamrava is the author of a number of journal articles and books, including, most recently, Righteous Politics: Power and Resilience in Iran (Cambridge University Press, 2023); A Dynastic History of Iran: From the Qajars to the Pahlavis (Cambridge University Press, 2022); and Triumph and Despair: In Search of Iran's Islamic Republic (Oxford University Press, 2022).

Director-General of the International Labour Organization

Gilbert F. Houngbo, born in Togo in 1961, assumed the role of Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in October 2022, making history as the first African to hold this position. With a background in business management and finance, he has a diverse career spanning roles in the private sector, the United Nations, and serving as Prime Minister of Togo from 2008 to 2012. Houngbo's current priorities as Director-General of the ILO are on advancing social justice, combating workplace inequalities and discrimination, improving labour conditions, expanding social protection, and promoting gender equality on a global scale.
The conversation is scheduled to take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a cocktail reception to follow until 8 p.m.
The main objective of the conference is to bring together experts from the U.S., the Middle East, and other regions of the world to discuss the ways in which America’s invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq have shaped the U.S., MENA and the world in the past twenty years. The conference will focus on key geopolitical groupings of Iraq’s regional neighbors, and cover critical cross-cutting themes, including the emergence of Da’esh, women in post-invasion Iraq, issues of global governance, climate change, and natural resource management.

With Islamophobia becoming a household term over the past decade, it is incumbent on scholars and practitioners to explore the historical origins and global connections of this phenomenon to fully understand and confront its current iterations. Convened by members of the Georgetown University in Qatar faculty, this conference brings together a diverse collection of professionals, academics, government officials, artists, and students to explore the global, historical, theological, and political dimensions that drive practices of Islamophobia. We also aim to provide a public platform for engagement on this important topic and invite you to join the conversation.
