Eastern Mediterranean Energy Geopolitics

This collaborative project, established in 2025, examines the major contemporary energy-related geopolitical issues and challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean. Led by Rory Miller, Director of the Energy Studies Program at Georgetown University in Qatar, and Ali Bakir, Research Assistant Professor, Ibn Khaldon Center for Humanities & Social Sciences at Qatar University, it collects contributions from 11 universities across nine countries.

Outcome

With the aim of producing a special journal issue, participants will contribute a scholarly paper. Recorded presentations of the paper topics will be made available on this page. Topics include maritime boundary disputes and international law, regional energy alliances and institutions, naval competition, climate change, energy transition strategies, competition over ports, great power involvement in the region, the maritime factor in regional conflict management and resolution.
